April 2019 Guest Editor Is EMMA SzH!!! Theme/s: BLOOD – violence, lines, the end times

Burning House Press are excited to welcome EMMA SzH as our APRIL 2019 guest editor! As of today EMMA will take over editorship of Burning House Press online for the full month of APRIL.

Submissions for EMMA are open from today – 1st APRIL and will remain open until 23rd APRIL.

EMMA’S theme/s for the month are as follows

BLOOD

VIOLENCE, LINES, THE END TIMES

“For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.” Leviticus 17:11

Art across all media is sought to build a mosaic of that most inner integument: bodily, socially, earthly; we strive to name our communal, personal element, the river that pegs us; the promise and the curse that binds us.

What was blood to you when you:

lived, died, returned, repaid, restored, hurt, lied, taxonimised, identified, glorified, fled

What does it mean when it comes every month? What does it mean when it doesn’t?

Over the Threshold

We laugh like newlyweds

as you carry me over the threshold

into a house rife with the spirits

of former tenants-

a lonely caretaker, a childless couple,

a single mother-

their DNA peeling off the walls

like chipped paint.

Every Hour Hurts in Fall

By now, you have adjusted to time’s addition, waking

without alarm, your body’s sudden jolt of electricity—

your toes and fingers wiggle—eyelids flip open to stare

at the ceiling’s cold.  You’re still here.  Isn’t that crazy?

You want to get moving before you hold still, before

you find yourself between the flight of day & dream.

She Speaks have introduced their theme/s for your guidance:

Gender & Revolution

“If I didn’t define myself for myself, I would be crunched into other people’s fantasies for me and eaten alive.”

  • Audre Lorde

“No real social change has ever been brought about without a revolution… Revolution is but thought carried into action.”

  • Emma Goldman (Writer and Anarchist)

What does gender look like to you? If gender is a construct, how would you deconstruct it? If you could re-write or reframe gender norms, would you? What would your world look like? What changes, if any, would you like to see?

What does revolution look like? Why is it important and what changes are needed?

We want you to use words or images to investigate gender, revolution, or both. You could draw on personal experiences, historical / her-storical narratives, imagined environments or cultural commentary. We welcome voices that represent different worldviews, beliefs and geographical locations.

We want art that breaks rules; that challenges patriarchy; that expresses personal struggle; that exposes the impact of cultural norms. Don’t be afraid to break out of your comfort zone and push the boundaries.

We can’t wait to see your submissions.

Love,

She Speaks

James’ Theme/s for the month are as follows

Liminal Spaces

James has introduced his theme for your guidance:

I’m fascinated by those spaces that are on the threshold between the interior and exterior, the conversational and the unnamable, the recognizable present and the intangible future. Please send work you feel might be too eccentric for other venues—writing with twilight-lit edges, photography that blends the particular with the anonymous, art that is charged with the radically other.

Are there images and phrase that only grow more cryptic the more we think about them? Are there barely audible voices still waiting to be recorded? Alejandra Pizarnik’s poetry, Shirley Jackson’s novels, Sun Ra’s discography, Tarkovsky’s films, Beckett’s plays, Francis Bacon’s humanoid creatures, voices reading the Tarot heard in the static between radio stations, night gardens with metallic-seeming insects…mystic political tracts, literary realism haunted by sci-fi, Gothic verse imagining lunar vistas of paradisiac ruin…Please send work involving liminal spaces that question and invoke.

jamespatepic

James Pate is a poet and fiction writer. His books include The Fassbinder Diaries (Civil Coping Mechanisms), Flowers Among the Carrion: Essays on the Gothic in Contemporary Poetry (Action Books Salvo Series), and Speed of Life (Fahrenheit Press). He teaches creative writing at Shepherd University, in Shepherdstown, WV.

An Interview with Heidi Saman

By chance, I met Heidi Saman on tumblr, where she curates an excellent blog about cinema. Along with working as an associate producer for NPR’s Fresh Air, Saman is also a gifted filmmaker, who just premiered her first feature film, Namour, at the LA Film Festival to rave reviews. Namour explores the existential crisis of an Arab American man working as a valet driver in the aftermath of the 2008 recession. Saman was kind enough to take time out of her hectic schedule of promoting Namour to answer some of my questions. Our conversation touches on various subjects, including racism in Hollywood and Saman’s cinematic inspirations.
